In 2012, LOBAS founder Alison Smith began working in Deepak Chopra’s executive offices in Carlsbad, CA. Immersed in modern spirituality, she became a certified meditation instructor, built a conscious community, and encountered countless malas. But she grew tired of seeing the same designs—one type of gemstone, a silk tassel, nothing new.

Determined to create something different, Alison mastered mala making and began teaching others under the Chopra umbrella. Today, she continues to reimagine this ancient tradition, incorporating diverse gemstones with unique energetic properties, one of a kind guru beads and experimenting with alternative tassel styles.
